The Problems Caused by Hard Water

Everybody has heard the terms hard water and soft water. Many people spend a lot of money to make their water less hard using a variety of water purification devices and techniques. Hard water has dissolved metals in it like calcium and magnesium from local limestone primarily from local dolomite. Depending on your location, you could also have metals like iron and aluminum. While minerals in your water are not generally bad for you, there have been extensive studies indicated that aluminum is not good to ingest over long periods of time. That is why aluminum cookware is no longer produced by most manufacturers. The bottom line is that while hard water is not generally bad for you to drink, it can cause problems with your plumbing and virtually prevents the formation of soap sudswith most detergents.

Inconveniences of Having Hard Water

Since soap does not dissolve as well in hard water as it does in soft water, your laundry may not get as clean as you would like. There are detergents made for people with hard water, but some people just add more of their regular detergent to get more suds. The problem is that the residual soap may not be thoroughly rinsed from your laundry and may cause some people to experience skin irritation. You will have to do some research for what works best in your water, but the good news is that your neighbors most likely have the same water source as you.

Dishes are washed at a much higher heat than your clothes. Unfortunately, the minerals dissolved in your hard water are released from the water more readily at hightemperatures. While some people have to spot remover solution in their dishwasher for automatic release, you will always have spots on your glasses if your water has an extremely high level of dissolved minerals.

Bathing can be the most troublesome though. Since hard water doesn't dissolve the soap as well, you will have that feeling of a film or residue being left on your skin and on your bathtub as a ring. Again, there is some soap that works better in this kind of water, but people with highly sensitive skin types will always have difficulties bathing in hard water. Laundry and dishwashing liquids with bad water are just inconveniences compared to bathing in it. If you have water problems and your spouse is scratching like they have fleas, you might want to give serious consideration to awater purification system that will make you feel like a new person.

Damage Caused by Hard Water

Your clothes will simply not last as long as if you washed them in soft water. And if you have the correct washing machine and know the technique for washing silk, it will do you no good if your clothes only last half as long before wearing out.

Hard water is like cholesterol. It will clog your pipes like cholesterol clogs your arteries. But, unlike your arteries, you can replace plumbing pipes. It forms on the stairs inside of everything that carries water in your house. Everything from the main pipes of your house to your appliances will be affected. And just like your body, clogged pipes will make your systems work harder and expend more energy. More energy means higherutility bills.

Solar heating systems providers may not inform you that your pool system will start costing you more to run when the electrical pump starts working harder because the small solar tubing starts to accumulate runs. Consult your local pool company before you install a water purification system in any solar pool heating loop.

3 Areas in Your Kitchen You Should Childproof That You May Not Have Thought About

There are no-brainer areas like electrical outlets that you know you must cap to protect a young toddler, and stoves that are hot, but there are spots that are even more dangerous in your kitchen that you might not have thought about as an unsafe spots.

dishwasher detergent or a rinse agent in their dispensers, these highly toxic chemicals can seriously hurt a baby if ingested. Make sure you never leave detergents just sitting in the machine and that you use keep the dishwasher properly closed at all times. Use the proper safety closure if your child is clever enough to have figured out how toopen your machine for further protection. These can also prevent your child from himself on hot scalding steam if he attempts to open the door while the dishwasher is running.

Refrigerators and freezers are innocuous enough under normal circumstances, but to young children there are a number of dangers here, such as pulling out glass containers that can fall and shatter or grabbing medicines or other liquids that can be dangerous if eaten. There may be access to raw meats, eggs and other foods that would be problematic for a kid to touch and then possibly stick their fingers in their mouths, too. A child with an allergy to certain food product could potentially consume it as well. Not to mention, it's fairly easy for a kid to lock himself in a refrigerator or freezer unit and gettrapped. Several childproof baby latches available work on a fridge without doing any damage to its surface.

Garbage cans definitely need to be tucked into a cabinet or up high on the counter when babies and toddlers can reach them. Kids can easily get into the pail and unknowingly eat foods or objects that are old, expired or unsafe. Aside from making a sheer mess, they can grab something from inside the can that you've tossed that's been broken (such as glass) that can hurt them or pull out the garbage bag and accidentally suffocate.

Take the time to look beyond the obvious in your kitchen and consider hazardous areas that may pose a threat to a young child. Protective latches are available at most big box stores and baby home improvement shops.

How To Remove Nasty Carpet Stains

Our floors bear the brunt of many scuffs and spills, accidents of all types. And somehow, the worst of these seem to land on the surfaces that are hardest to clean-the moquette tachée, dommage!

Here are a few tricks to try, in order to remove some of the more stubborn carpet-catastrophes:

Water-based Paint

Begin by scraping off as much of the excess as possible. Then mix a solution consisting of a cup of warm water with a few drops of liquid dish detergent added. Apply this to the stain and let it set awhile, particularly if the paint has already dried. Scrub gently without spreading the strain. Blot this up with a clean dry hair spray. Blot with paper towel or clean white cloth, then repeat. Mix a half cut of hot water with a half cup of ammonia and a few drops of clear liquid detergent. Gently wash and then rinse with clear water. Blotcarpet or dry hair dryer.

Red lipstick

Scrape up as much as possible without spreading the stain. Use a bar of Ivory soap to create a sudsy solution. Stain will gradually disappear; then rinse area with clean water. Dry with fan or hair color the carpet, so you should test a small area of the rug before proceeding. As an alternative, try applying peanut butter to the stain. In either case, the residual will need to be removed thoroughlyafterwards. Do this by first using a clean rag to remove as much of the broken down gum solution as possible and then mix one teaspoon of dishwashing liquids detergent into a half cup of hot water and use this to wash the moquette tachée, dommage with a clean rag. Blot and repeat, then rinse with clean water. Dry with a blow dryer or fan.

Urine

Vinegar is the best agent for removing urine stains. Urine will discolor moquette tachée, dommage, but this effect can be neutralized with the quick application of vinegar. Apply a generous amount to the stains (but not enough to saturate the padding). Allow this to remain for a few minutes, then rinse the spot with clear water, blot with paper towels or a clean rag, and then dry the surface with a fan or blow dryer.

Cleaning Cast Iron-Learn The Best Way to Clean Cast Iron Cookware!

Make sure your cast iron is pre-seasoned or you have already done the seasoning process before you cook anything. It is a good idea to put oil or shorting in your pan before cooking to help keep food from sticking.

You should also heat your pans up slowly. Remember to use heavy oven mitts or even a welding glove works great for handling hot pans.

Cleaning: When you have cooked your meal you have two options:

1. Use a nylon brush and hot water to wipe out the pan or skillet.

2. Boil water in the pan to loosen stuck on food, then wipe with a paper towel or clean dishcloth.

You can choose one of these or a combination of both methods. Always dry the cast iron immediately after cleaning, do not let it air dry because the extended moisture may promoterust.

When cleaning cast iron, be careful not to put a hot pan into real cold water, this could cause the pan to crack because of the extreme temperatures change.

Be sure to wipe off the bottom of your pans if you are cooking on a campfire because they will get black with soot from the wood. You can wash the bottoms with plain water or wipe them off with paper towels.

The best way to deter rust from forming in your cookware, is place about a 1 tablespoon of oil in the bottom of the pan and wipe it around with a paper towel so the whole pan is coated.

storage:

Keep your cast iron in a cool, dry place. After cleaning you may stack or nest your cast iron Dutch oven and your skillet. Be sure to place a paper towel between the pans to help keep moisture frombuilding up and this also helps keep the pans clean if you cook on a campfire. If your pan has a lid, make sure to fold a paper towel and place it between the lid and the pot so that air can circulate. This will also help prevent rust.

The most important thing to remember is "Never use soap" or put your cast iron in the dishwasher detergent or soap on your cast iron pans, your food will stick more and you will probably need to season them because soap will cause rust or may make your food taste metallic.

If you follow these tips you will keep your cast iron for years to come.

Keep Your Sink For Water

Sink drain kitchen

There is nothing more aggravating in your kitchen than having a clogged drain. We all have a tendency to put things in our sink that shouldn't be there. Some get there by accident and some on purpose. It's important to always keep your drain cleaned so it doesn't become plugged. There are certain tips and reminders that may be helpful in keeping a clean sink.

Unless you have a garbage disposal in your sink, do not rinse food down your drain. Many people mistakenly believe that because the small particles of food go down their drain, everything is fine. Nothing could be further from the truth. Many items go so far and then sit there. Eventually enough items get there and can't get through so your drain, or pipes, becomes plugged. This often can costan expense of having a plumber come to unplug the drain plugged because it's far enough where you can't reach.

Grease is probably the worst culprit for plugging drains. Whether it's hot or cold grease grease, don't do it. Grease will cling to the sides of the pipe and thicken very quickly. It will keep piling up in your drain until your drain is plugged. Be sure to let grease cool and dispose of it in an airtight container. A good idea is to chilled it until it gets hard and then toss it out.

The only thing that should be poured down your drain is dishwashing liquids liquid that's made for use in your sink. Many other types of detergent, such as for car washing or dishwashers, can actually plug up your kitchen sink. They are thick and get broken down from the agitation ofyour dishwasher or washing machine, but will not break down when they are poured down your sink.

Calcium Chlorate and lime are ingredients many people pour down their sinks to help get rid of odors. While it may be true that some items made for odors contain these ingredients, those items are specifically made for use in your sink. Used alone, calcium chlorate and lime will not only cause a plug but will harden like cement and cause a big problem. Unfortunately, they don't always cause the plug at the goose neck, but further down the pipes.

In addition to not throwing cooking grease down your pipes, don't throw any type of oil or grease in the sink. Grease and oil will harden and leave plugs in your drain, which can cause problems in the future. Many times people have pouredsomething simple down their drain and been shocked when the sink becomes plugged. Often the plug is caused from an accumulation of things that were thrown down the drain in the past.

Another culprit for kitchen and bathroom drains is hair. Always use hair trap on your sinks and use a drain cleaner once a month to remove any hair that may be in your drain.

Natural Uses For Vinegar That Really Work

The uses of vinegar have been well established for centuries as a valuable element used in the kitchen for the use of cooking and preserving various types of foods. But did you know that vinegar can be used for many other uses that can replace more toxic products around the home? If you're interested in learning more ways to replace dangerous chemicals with a benign product or want to know more about some simple uses of vinegar that are beneficial, here are some ways use the product that has proved very helpful to many people over the years.

Mold and Mildew Destroyer for an RV's Interior

If you have an RV and it's been stored for the winter, it's common to notice a musty, moldy smell in it when you first open it for the camping season. Also, mildew can and mustdevelop in the bathroom area that needs to be treated from time to time. If you want to freshen up the interior of your RV after storage or anytime, simply buy a gallon of white vinegar, a soft cotton cloth and apply undiluted to the walls, ceiling, floor and bathroom area. You will be surprised at how fresh the interior becomes and how much it will lessen or totally eliminate the mold and mildew smell. You can apply as often as needed.

Natural Sunburn Treatment

If you have suffered a sunburn while at the beach or some other summer activity because you forgot to apply sun screen, did you know that several applications of apple or white vinegar lessens the pain and damage to the skin that occurs with a sunburn? Simply apply vinegar with your hands or with a soft cloth to allsunburned areas within a few hours of your initial sunburn. Apply several times, waiting between applications for the vinegar to dry. If applied the same day of your sunburn, you will notice that you will develop less blisters and that you will not be as sore even the next day after the burn. The down side of using vinegar, of course, is that it smells for awhile and it is a bit messy to apply. But the benefits of using vinegar for sunburns has been proven by many people to far surpass any over the counter products.

Make Your Dishes Shine

You make your dishes look shiny straight from the dishwasher detergent before the cycle begins. Vinegar cuts through any movie that can remain on dishes and produces a clear shine without youhaving to add another product to your detergent. Plus, it's a natural alternative to chemically laced shine agents.

There are many more uses that can be added to these very helpful applications that are commonly used vinegar every day by alternative product enthusiasts. Alternative natural uses of vinegar are not only healthy but also more cost effective in comparison to more toxic products for the same uses that are on the market today.

Hard Water-The Causes and What You Can Do

The causes for hard water is basically the liquid having a high content of minerals, consisting mostly of calcium and magnesium. If you suspect that your water might be hard, there are ways to determine its hardness and make it softer for using it at home.

While there is no strict evidence of it, there are still several studies that seem to suggest that hard water might be damaging to our health in the long run. It seems that the harder it is, the easier men in particular can get cardiovascular disease. In addition, it might also be correlated to childhood eczema.

While there is no clear evidence of it being really harmful for our health, it truly is a nuisance to many, however. The reason is because it kao3 lv4 the performance of various soaps and detergents, and itallows mineral build-up on all the fixtures it comes into contact with, which increases the need for faster maintenance than otherwise.

This is why it is generally considered useful to soften the liquid. This way the levels of calcium and magnesium in it will decrease to normal levels. There are different softening systems available, including water softeners that can be added to the washing machine or the dishwasher when cleaning clothes and dishes, filters, magnetic water conditioners and mechanical water softeners.

Water softeners

There are many water softeners on the market that help when washing your clothes or your dishes. They are available either in forms of pills or liquid. Some of them are well known, including borax and washing soda. The problem with thistreating method is that the water becomes too alkaline for the skin and it might damage it with prolonged use.

Water filters

One of the best ways to soften the water at home is by using various water filtering methods, including the well known reverse osmosis. You can generally find several filters available on the market today, and each of them have their own benefits and disadvantages. Before going for any of them, make sure to read up on them so you are aware of what type of treatment you are offering to your water. In addition to reverse osmosis you can also find granulated carbon filters, alkaline water machines and various combinations systems that uses several filters instead of just one type.

Magnetic water conditioners

Using this method the water passesthrough a magnetic field which modifies the ions of calcium and magnesium. " This way they no longer causes the scales. Technically it doesn't become softer, however the limescale that is usually created by these minerals deposited is no longer advanced to that degree. This can easily Inca the shelf life of any clothing that is washed in the treated liquid.

Motorcycle Camping Gear Tips

First let me start this article by saying that there is a difference between a motorcycle camping trip and a road trip. The major difference is that on a road trip you usually spend your nights in motels along the way. On the other hand if you plan to do a real motorcycle camping trip you will need to plan your overnight stops ahead of time. Be aware that some camping grounds are not friendly to motorcycles. Also the amount motorcycle camping gear you will need will depend mostly on the type of trip you are planning.

Motorcycle camping is like hiking

Dishwasher Detergent

Motorcycle camping gear is very similar to the type of materials hikers bring on their trip. It should always be small and light. Try to buy quality camping gear that you can easily set up at night and tear down in the morning. Make sure that all you motorcycle camping gears are packed as compact as you can. This will make your trip safer and will prevent any part of your equipment to come loose when you ride your bike. If you are planning a long trip you might want to consider the use of a small motorcycle trailer. They are usually very light and are easy to pull depending on the type of motorcycle you ride.

Since you don't have a lot of space when camping in motorcycle a good tip you might consider is to buy your food and water on a daily basis, by doing this you will save a lot of space. For cooking, buying a metal mess can be a very wise decision; you will be able to clean it at every campsite facilities. Just remind to bring with you a small bottle of liquid dishwashing detergent. As a precaution you should always bring along freeze-dried or dehydrated meals. Those can be purchase in almost every camping supply stores.

Be prepared for any type of Weather

Since you are used to riding your bike, you already know that riding under the rain is not that fun so you should always be prepared for this kind of weather by bringing along at least one change of clothing. Hazardous Waste

Question: What items are considered household hazardous waste (HHW)?

Answer: Leftover household products that contain corrosive, toxic, ignitable, or reactive ingredients are considered to be HHW. Items including paints, cleaners, oils, batteries, and pesticides contain potentially hazardous ingredients require special care and when it's time for their disposal.

Dishwasher Detergent

As a country, Americans generate 1.6 million tons of household hazardous waste per year. These figures translate to as much as one hundred pounds of hazardous waste per household, stored in garages as well as in and around the home.

What are some improper methods of household waste disposal? Pouring them down the drain, on the ground, into storm sewers, or in some cases putting them out with the trashcan lead to environmental contamination and poses a threat to human health.

It may seem obvious, but hazardous products should be kept in their original containers with labels intact. Household hazardous waste should never be mixed with any other products. In some situations, incompatible products can react, ignite or even explode.

When in doubt, it is best to refer to local environmental, health, solid waste or other appropriate government agency for instructions on proper disposal of HHW. Many communities now offer HHW drop-off programs and collection days. The following are some tips for recycling specific materials.

From drugstores to big box stores, Americans purchase nearly 3 billion dry-cell batteries every year to power radios, toys, cellular phones, watches, laptop battery may substitute for hundreds of single-use batteries. Rechargeable batteries are also easy to recycle.

What about cleaning products?
Most antibacterial cleaners, air fresheners, dishwasher detergents, oven cleaners, carpet cleaners and toilet/sink/tub/tile cleaners contain toxic ingredients that can seep into groundwater. Not only are most cleaning products bad for the environment, they can be bad for your respiratory health too. To minimize their negative effects, it is best to dispose of any unused products at a local HHW site. A better solution may be to buy or make your own greener cleaners. Regular soap is negligibly less effective than antibiotic soap in killing germs and not nearly as bad for the environment. Scrubbing toilets, sinks and tubs with vinegar or lemon juice and baking soda works well. Baking soda and water is also a safe and effective way to clean your oven or carpet.

Recent press reports have shown that trace amounts of prescription and over-the-counter durgs are showing up in our drinking water. The cause is the expired contents of our medicine cabinets being thrown away or flushed down the drain. An alternate disposal method is checking to see what local pharmacy will take back unused or expired drugs.

Compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) have become popular because of their energy efficiency. While newer CFLs contain lower mercury levels than older lamps, the amount is still too high to simply place bulbs in the trash. Home Depot has a CFL recycling program that allows the return of any unbroken bulbs for free recycling. The recycling of old electronics, also known as e-waste, can be disposed of at many Target, RadioShack, Best Buy, the Home Depot and Lowe's stores. eCycling is important because most components contain lead, which can contaminate groundwater and become a health hazard.

Because it is illegal to throw away paint or paint thinner in many states, this material should be taken to an HHW site. It may also be possible to donate usable paint to a local paint store to be remixed or sent to a Habitat for Humanity location.

Tips For Maintaining Your Boat

Like anything else, the best way to care for your boat is to take preventative measures. Don't wait until you can barely see your boat under all of the grime that has built up, to decide it needs a good cleaning. Wouldn't you rather spend the nice summer day enjoying your boat instead of cleaning it?

Let's start topside:

Dishwasher Detergent

Because the surface of the boat is a gelcoat, it makes regular cleaning easy. This can be cleaned with gelcoat to mild soap, or boat and then rinsed thoroughly with fresh water to prevent build up of soap scum or water spots. Start at the bow and work your way back because boats drain from bow to stern. You can apply a coat of automotive or boat wax twice a year to maintain a nice shine and protect the gelcoat. Only apply to the parts that willnot be walked to prevent slipping.

It is important to dry the canvas before storing your boat to avoid moisture damage and mold buildup. To wash the canvas use a dishwashing detergent and a soft scrub brush if necessary. Every so often, you should lubricate snaps with petroleum jelly and zippers with a paraffin wax. You should also periodically treat the canvas with a waterproofing solution to prevent break-down of the material.

Don't do windows?

Glass windows can be cleaned with a glass cleaner or a water and vinegar solution. To prevent scratches apply a clear silicon spray with a soft cloth.

Vinyl windows should be cleaned with water because chemicals in cleaners can break down the vinyl. After cleaning apply a clear wax.

If you roll up vinyl windows, do it carefully to avoid scratching. Leaving them rolled up for long periods of time will lead to discoloration.

Have a seat:

Upholstery should be wiped down with a wet cloth, removing dirt and salt. Apply a vinyl upholstery cleaner with a damp cloth, rinse, and wipe off with a clean cloth. You should then use an upholstery wax that protects against UV damage. To get rid of mildew stains, nasty use a solution of one part ammonia to four parts water. Scrub the area with a soft or medium brush and rinse with fresh water.

Secure the line:

Ropes can be damaged by salt, oil, and dirt. It is important to keep these maintained because they are used for many essential purposes. These should be checked regularly, and replaced if there is any sign of deterioration ortears. Because knotting causes access wear on the lines avoid this as much as possible.

Keep the ropes out of direct sunlight when not in use, and rinse them after each use. Ropes can be washed in a washing machine with a mild detergent. Be sure to place them inside a pillowcase first to avoid damage to the machine.

Fender Bender:

Bumpers take the beatings, poundings and sometimes crashes for the side of the boat. Because of this, they are bound to get dirty. Dirt, tar, and grease can be removed with a strong cleanser and scrubbing pad. When using tar remover, test a small area first to check that it is not too abrasive for the plastic.

**5 stars** Works great in our family, July 7, 2011

By Sarah Mc Bride (Concord, MA)

We're fans of the 7th Gen products and we've recently switched from the 7th Gen powder to the liquid (if was on sale) and find it works great. I have a nice Bosch dishwasher that is now three years old and uses about 3 gallons of water per load, heats it own water and uses steam (no coil) to dry the dishes.

We DO NOT PRE RINSE ANYTHING. Simply scrape off the gunk/fats and into the washer they go. If it is a tomato oil based residue, that container gets wiped out first. On the regular wash cycle everything gets nice and clean. If we're not good about cleaning the dishwasher filter, we do get a bit of grit on glasses but everything else is clean. I don't have problems with any residue on the dishes, we fill the reservoir about 2/3 full and we have "regular" water, neither soft nor hard. Bosch does recomend using JetDry in the dishwasher but I haven't really noticed a lot of spotting since moving from the powder to the gel. I have lots of sippy cups and they come out clean and without any weird smells.

I have not idea what the complaints are... (Read Full Of This Reviews)

**5 stars** Does a Great Job. Very clean, no Smell, and Crystal Clear, January 3, 2012

By paper tiger "Adriel August" (Carlisle, PA) Amazon Verified Purchase

I had a nice energy efficient dish washer in my townhouse, but when I moved into an old 1950 home I now have a dishwasher which is probably about 8-10 years old and very not energy efficient. I was using the Cascade Complete Gel Dishwasher Detergent, 45-Ounce and the dishes and glasses would come out smelling like detergent, streaky and everything had a film on it. I knew something had to be done as I am a very clean person and ended up putting half the dishes back in the sink while unloading the dishwasher.

I discovered these Cascade ActionPacs and have been loving them ever... (Read Full Of This Reviews)
